Pediatric + Academic Program
Maria always struggled at school, but after being hit by a car, concentrating and learning became much more challenging, and her self esteem and behaviour deteriorated. With the support of her family, school and rehabilitation team, Maria has overcome many challenges, and is now proud to be able to swim, recite her multiplication tables, and speak more clearly. NRS's pediatric program is designed to meet the unique rehabilitation and academic needs of young children like Maria who have sustained a brain injury. We service children and adolescents of all ages, as well young adults in College or University programs. Specific goals include:
- To identify how the brain injury has impacted the young person's ability to participate and learn at school (as compared to developmental norms and the child's pre-accident ability).
- To provide home and school based therapy, coaching and tutoring to help the young person achieve his or her pre-accident academic functioning or personal best, and to prepare him or her for future challenges.
- To educate all parties involved about the potential implications any deficits may have on the young person's ability to participate and learn as he or she matures (i.e. as the challenges at school become greater).
- To assist the young person and family to play an active role in setting goals and program planning (click on Philosophy/Self-Advocacy for details).
Our pediatric team is experienced in working with young people with brain injury in the school system. They tailor each program to take into consideration the young person's age and developmental stage, the expectations on the young person in terms of academic, social and independent skills, and the young person's and family's goals. Programming may address cognition and perception, physical function, psychosocial, behaviour and family issues and self-advocacy.
