Occupational Therapy
NRS occupational therapists assist adults and children with brain injury to:
- Become as independent as possible in such activities as self-care and homemaking.
- Resume their leisure activities, or if this is not possible, develop new interests and hobbies.
- Engage in meaningful community activities, such as volunteer work.
- Return to school or work.
NRS therapists assess each client's pre-injury status (gross and fine motor function, sensation, perception, communication, cognition, psychosocial status, activities of daily living, leisure, work and/or academic activities). They then use standardized and unstandardized tests to determine the client's current functional status. Finally, they seek out the client and family members priorities, and work closely with them and other members of the team to develop a an appropriate treatment program.
Individual treatment is provided in the home and community, workplace or school and involves education, activity based "remedial" programming, and the provision of adaptive equipment and compensatory strategies to maximize independence.
