Rehab Support Services - Rehabilitation Coaching
Since 1989, NRS' skilled rehabilitation coaches, working under the supervision of NRS therapists, have offered the type of intensive, cost effective support many individuals with TBI need to achieve success. Our coaches are now available to work under the supervision of non-NRS hospital and community therapists.
The Role of The NRS Rehabilitation Coach
- NRS Rehab Coaches work under the direction of an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapists Speech-Language Pathologist, Psychologists or Social Worker, or under the direction of a team of regulated health professionals.
- They provide direct, intensive support in the home, community, workplace or school, helping clients practice and apply skills and strategies learned in therapy in their everyday lives.
- They maintain daily records and goal oriented progress reports.
- NRS Rehab Coaches DO NOT complete assessments, develop or revise treatment plans or provide case management services.
Coach Qualifications and Training
- NRS coaches have exceptional skills because they are trained by (and have experience working under) our expert team of Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech-Language Pathologists and Social Workers. Our intensive in-house program takes place over a six-month period and consists of classroom instruction, hands-on training, take-home reading, research assignments and a final exam. As well, our coaches participate in on-going monthly professional development sessions.
- Each case is directly supervised by our Program Coordinator, who has extensive experience in this specialized field.
- All NRS Rehab Coaches have a post secondary diploma or degree in a related field, such as rehabilitation counselling, social service, education, recreation, computers, physical education and music.
NRS' Neuro-Cognitive Approach to Behavioural Programming:
It is now well recognized in the literature that traditional "behaviour management" strategies (including the use of consequences, rewards and punishments) are not highly effective for adults and children with TBI who typically present with impaired memory, attention, reasoning, initiation, communication and energy levels. Rather, a Neuro-Cognitive Approach is advocated, one which focuses on personal choice, positive everyday routines, and intensive contextualized practice of skills and strategies in real life situations.
At Neuro-Rehab Services, we have found that a home, work or school based rehabilitation coach is often an essential member of any team providing this form of leading edge cognitive/behavioural programming. This is because, only a qualified coach, working under the supervision of one or more experienced occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, social workers and/or physiotherapists, can provide the type of intensive support many individuals with TBI need to succeed.
