SKILLS ADDRESSED
Behaviour
As mentioned under the rehabiltation coach section, it is now well recognized in the literature that traditional "behaviour management" strategies (including the use of consequences, rewards and punishments) are not highly effective for adults and children with TBI who typically present with impaired memory, attention, reasoning, initiation, communication and fatigue. Rather, a Neuro-Cognitive Approach is advocated, one which focuses on personal choice, positive everyday routines and intensive, contextualized practice of skills and strategies in real life situations.
At Neuro-Rehab Services, we have found that a home, work or school based rehabilitation coach is often an essential member of any team providing this form of leading edge cognitive/behavioural programming. This is because only a qualified coach, working under the supervision of an experienced occupational therapist, speech and language pathologist, social worker and/or physiotherapist, can provide the type of intensive support many individuals with TBI need to succeed.
